Surge in Data Centre Energy Demand

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in an era of unprecedented data processing needs, leading to a significant expansion of data centres globally. This growth, while propelling technological innovation, poses substantial challenges in terms of energy consumption and sustainability. A notable example is the ambitious Stargate Project, which underscores the scale of infrastructure being developed to support AI’s evolution. In parallel, the European Union is proactively formulating strategies to address the burgeoning energy demands of data centers, aiming to balance technological progress with environmental responsibility.​

The Stargate Project: A Monumental Leap in AI Infrastructure

In early 2025, a consortium comprising OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX announced the Stargate Project—a groundbreaking initiative with an investment plan of up to $500 billion over four years. The project’s initial phase involves deploying $100 billion to construct state-of-the-art data centers and associated electricity generation facilities in Texas. This infrastructure is designed to bolster AI development, including endeavors like enhancing digital health records and creating customized vaccines. President Donald Trump emphasised that this investment reflects confidence in America’s potential, predicting a “golden age” of innovation and economic growth. ​

Escalating Energy Demands of Data Centers

The proliferation of AI technologies has led to a surge in data center energy consumption. McKinsey research indicates that Europe’s data center power consumption is projected to more than triple by 2030, escalating from 62 terawatt-hours (TWh) to over 150 TWh. This surge is primarily driven by advancements in AI and digitalization.  Furthermore, data centres could account for up to 25% of new net electricity demand in Europe by 2030, with AI technologies like generative AI being significant contributors.

The European Union’s Response

Recognising the pivotal role of AI in future economic growth, the EU has announced a €200 billion investment to bolster its AI capabilities. This funding aims to support the creation of AI ‘gigafactories’—large-scale data centers essential for training AI models. The initiative seeks to position Europe competitively in the global AI landscape, addressing the growing demand for data processing infrastructure. The European Union has also implemented measures to promote transparency and efficiency within the data centre industry. The Energy Efficiency Directive now mandates data center operators to publish basic data and share more detailed information with the European Commission. This initiative aims to aggregate a comprehensive snapshot of energy consumption across Europe, facilitating informed policy decisions and promoting sustainability. ​
